Just launched in the heart of Flemington, Cafe Annick is an informal rustic eatery located at 117 Broad St., the former location of Stowe's Deli. "We completed a total renovation of the shop and when people walk through the door they can't believe the transformation," said owner Annick Elziere.
Elziere, who is a native of France, designed the decor with French accents, including tablecloths from Provence. The walls are a peach color and there are lots of green plants.
Elziere said she has always wanted to own a coffee shop and after she was laid off from her job at a pharmaceutical company in Mercer County, she said the timing was right. "I found this location and though and thought it would be ideal," she said.
Cafe Annick serves sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, fresh ground coffee, espresso and cappuccino.
Elziere said some popular menu selections are bagels with cream cheese, chocolate croissants and steaming coffee. At noon daily, the lunch rush begins, she said. "Sometimes 15 people walk in at once and they want their sandwiches quick," she said. "There are a lot of business people who eat here and we get some judges from the courthouse, too."
Later in the afternoon, Elziere said shoppers stop in for a cup of coffee or some soup. "It's usually ladies in groups of two or three who stop in later in the day,” she said. "They say it's a nice place to come in and relax."
Customers can select from a wide array of specialty deli sandwiches. Elziere said the Italian sub is the most popular, followed by turkey and roast beef. "For around $6.00 a person can have a sub and a drink here," she said.
In an attempt to offer healthier fare, Elziere offers fat free mayonnaise and wraps. Homemade soups, salads and grilled items are also available. "If something's not on the menu, we will do our best to accommodate the customer," she added.
While patrons eat lunch or enjoy coffee and dessert, two high speed Internet access computers are available to customers free of charge. Additionally, Cafe Annick remains open until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings with an open-mic opportunity.
"Stand-up comedians, musicians, poetry readers and speakers are invited to perform on Friday and Saturday nights," Elziere said. "But, they have to call me in advance so I can meet them and learn about what they want to perform."
